A Meaningful Visit to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia

Words such as “pitiful,” “unfortunate,” and “unlucky” are often used to describe people living with cancer. Although usually said with sympathy, these labels can unintentionally overlook the strength and resilience of those facing the illness. Cancer is one of the most difficult diagnoses a person can receive, yet patients often face not only the disease itself, but also the way society views and treats them.

With this understanding, members of the school’s LEO Club visited the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM). The visit gave students a valuable opportunity to learn more about cancer awareness, patient care, and the importance of empathy in the community.

The LEO Club also carried out a donation drive with the support of students and parents. Essential items such as powdered milk, rice, and hand soap were collected for the organisation. Founded to prevent cancer, support those affected, and raise awareness, NCSM plays an important role in helping patients, survivors, and their families. Donations of daily necessities are especially meaningful as they help reduce costs and improve the comfort of those receiving care.

During the visit, students were welcomed by Mr Yip, who shared useful information about cancer and its impact in society. Many students were surprised to realise how little they knew about the most common types of cancer. This highlighted the need for more open discussions and greater public awareness regarding health issues.

Students were then taken to Level 1, where they were introduced to the advanced machines used for cancer screening and diagnosis. The equipment was large and impressive, showing how far technology has progressed in the medical field. Nurses on duty kindly explained their responsibilities and demonstrated how the machines were used. Their passion and dedication made the learning experience even more engaging.

The visit continued to Level 4, where accommodation facilities for patients are located. Students observed clean, bright, and welcoming rooms designed to provide comfort during treatment. They also learned that NCSM supports patients in many ways beyond medical care. These services include patient counselling, financial assistance programmes, support groups, and awareness campaigns that help reduce stigma in society.

One of the most touching parts of the visit was the children’s playroom. Filled with toys and colourful decorations, the space was created to bring comfort and joy to young patients. It served as a reminder that emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical treatment, especially for children facing serious illnesses.

At the end of the tour, students gathered in a meeting room where Mr Yip and the volunteers presented them with hand-decorated cloth bags designed by patients. This thoughtful gift reflected the creativity and courage of those undergoing treatment and left a lasting impression on everyone present.

Overall, the visit to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia was both educational and meaningful. It reminded students not to take good health for granted and to appreciate the simple gift of a healthy body. Most importantly, it reinforced the message that people living with cancer should never be defined by their illness. They deserve dignity, respect, hope, and the full support of society.
